Open Thread (#20)
I guess I have to again crank up the stupid emotional attachment to the band of young, rich, mercenary, spoiled boys** that comprise the Cleveland Indians and become overinvested in the outcomes of their games against a similar gang from Boston. So like, Go Tribe and all of that, I hope your performance -enhancing drugs work better than the other guys - just like Marion Jones’s did. Sorry, long week, overtired man. If you want to relive some good in-game Yankee-bashing and Indians-anxiety, go read the comments at this post at Lawyers, Guns and Money.
**Please not to interpret as judgement relative to any of the other gangs of boys doing the same in other cities.

Hmmm, God punishes Indian’s fan for cynical Open Thread post. Well God, if you’re that petty you can bite me.

Fucking hell. I suspect it’s all my fault - first I confidently told a colleague that there was “no way the Sox would make it past the Angels” and Wednesday at dinner I provoked another one by predicting that the Indians would win in 5. I really should learn to keep my mouth shut.

Addendum: due to the pernicious influence of Harvard and MIT on the mathematics community, there are a lot of Red Sox fans around in our profession. Curse them (the Sox, not the fans).

Actually, I’m going to lay this one on the MOJ. She emailed me two or three times today, and not one of those times did she alert me to the fact that it was an important game day. Ergo, I was NOT on the job. Therefore, the Red Sox did not go down in flames.
Not Christian, JP or my fault.

Tell them they owe that World Series win in 2004 not to the breaking of the Curse of the Bambino, but to the strength of the Curse of the Kiera overriding it. They’ll look at you like you’re nuts, but what else is new?

Yes, a bit harsh … but I do at times get a bit weary of everyone (me included) buying into the projection of narrative onto the enterprise of professional sport.

It’s time to get the hate on for Beantown!
Indians must beat the Red Sox at 5pm MOJ time.
Also, Cal Bears are playing Oregon State at 4pm MOJ time…let’s keep the academic school at the top of the AP sports polls by willing them another win!
Fresno is playing Idaho, but so far as I’m concerned, Fresno State can continue to go down in flames. They’ve got a bunch of lawsuits over the discrimintion against women in sports. Bunch of misogynistic jerks…they fired the women’s coach (who had a winning record every year she was there) because she spoke out against inequalities and the dehumanization of women in athletics, and they keep Pat Hill who hasn’t been able to build a winning team (David Carr was already on board when Pat Hill was hired) to save his life. Not to mention the fact that Fresno State can’t keep the male athletes in line…arrests on drugs and murder charges abound.

Go Indians! Go Bears (Cal or Chicago, tomorrow)! Northwestern already pulled one out against Minnesota, so good start (for me) to the sports day.

Opening play, quarterback almost mishandles the snap, hands it off and the guy goes 45+ yards. Is this a Golden touch or what???
TC?? What happened at the Samsung/?? Yes this is a modified rhetorical Q.

Well that 12 play 76 yard drive by OSU to start the second half made the Goldies defense look as porous as say.. well.. the Cincinnati Bengals.. who give up 400+ yards and 32 points per game.
and a one run lead isn’t not going to even that series in the East. We need more RedSox hate energy pouring over towards Boston.

Why go for it there?? I’ll never understand it. Take the three, it’s early in the second half!

Cal game not on the Tube here. Pens win 6-4 3 in a row, but just once it would be nice to have an actual defense. Still one run Tribe lead - just a little excitement getting back to that. And yes 1-run ain’t gonna cut it. If I have to watch Borowski pitching to Ortiz or Ramirez with a 1-run lead in the 9th ….

Okay, that sideline unsportsmanlike conduct call sucked. It was a young official losing his composure in front of the OSU bench. Wow, and where was the call on that kickoff facemask; oh they called holding on call instead? Looks to me like the OSU coach is refereeing the game from his sideline. Sad when that sort of loss of integrity ruins a good game.

Okay. How ’bout the Condie bobblehead?
Did you know that you can get custom bobbleheads made? You can do it online, but there’s also some kiosks in Vegas where you can get it done. I couldn’t resist. We have a wedding set bobblehead, and one each of the D-Man and myself. Yeah, I know, we’re sick puppies. BUT WE’RE CUTE!

Nice pass to get out of the hole. So we have 18 seconds and pass interference on OSU at the five yard line.
Oh my gawd.. that was stunningly stupid on the part of the freshman quarterback… Complete bonehead play.. mostly by the coach for not taking the time to set up the field goal.. Cal loses..

Since the all-wise TV schedulers deemed that I would be more interested in Auburn/Arkansas or Kansas State/Colorado than the #2 team in the country, I missed that drama (and with the likely ascension of OSU to #1 with the Cal loss, it would be less-than-honest of me not to mention that my rooting interest would have been mixed at best).
And since modern playoff baseball games approach cricket matches in length I missed the end of that drama as well. I was awake through the 6th and give the Indians credit for responding in the very next inning to both of Boston’s outbursts. I fell asleep from the 7th through the 9th, woke up to see that Boston would have Ortiz, Ramirez and Lowell up in the 10th and decided to forestall PTSLD by going back to sleep. In other words - I am a total wimp!

Well, I won’t say what I did at the end of the 10th inning that charged up the Indians…suffice it to say it involved the D-Man. Snicker.

Well Sunday now.. and if you are a true blood GNF fan-at-it you will be watching the Samsung on NBC, Dallas/NewEngland on CBS, later, after rodeo you get baseball on Fox and so forth..
Ochoa is currently giving the rest of the best women in golf a clinic in how to manage a course 11 of 11 fairways hit from the tee, 14 of 14 greens hit in regulation, and only 24 putts in 14 holes, now leading by three at 17 under. Maybe i have to watch the Cowboys (amurka’s team from the bush league) get destroyed by real patriots. There must be a car race on other than NASCAR since that was last night.. mmmmmm

okay cars are out, as is women’s beach volleyball (same old pairs playing for the umpteenth time). Must stick with golf, to see if Suzanne can make up the five shots she made up yesterday, and see if Lorena somehow makes mistakes.

Ugh…the Cal game. Hideous, hideous loss. Cal’s totally inexperienced red shirt freshman filling in for the regular (and now injured) QB made the worst mistake ever to blow it at the end: failed to stop the clock by throwing the ball away so the kicker could tie it up and send the game into OT with a short field goal. True, the game never should have come down to that play (plenty of turnovers and a host of team-wide sucking having nothing to do with the rookie QB). But still, if you’re going to make a mistake, why such a boneheaded one? Just. Too. Painful.
Kiera (#9)- yeah the Fresno situation, I’ve been following that sad story on Pacifica radio (KPFA up here). Sadly, harassment of female coaches is the rule, not the exception in college sports. Single women arriving at the job have to immediately go out of their way to let it be known that they are “straight” or else be subjected to an endless host of demeaning remarks, and worse.
