State of the Blog

A Message from the Minister of Justice
mojwhiteyy1.jpg

Most Some of you will be glad to hear that the WAAGNFNP blog will continue. While my first choice would have been to pull the plug on all of you lazy, worthless, good-for-nothing ingrates, it was clearly the desire of my Cabinet Officers and the High Council to continue on in some way. And I do try to listen to my Officers and High Council even though some of them need serious Re-Trunking from time to time.

The new plan is to scrap the idea of trying to continue on as a community blog since there’s clearly not enough interest for that. We’ll simply be your basic group blog with the philosophy that we are just a few friends talking amongst each other, and everyone is welcome to join the conversation.

There will also still be an Open Door policy for submitting posts for anyone who would like to contribute. I just will no longer be killing myself trying to keep a door open through which almost no one has an interest in walking.

The Ministry of Offense and Defense’s Tribunus Laticlavius, christian h., my valued blog co-administrator, will be gone for much of the summer. The Ministry of Justice’s GFAT (General Factotum and Tipstaff), JP Stormcrow, will be taking over for christian h. Also, stepping up to lend a hand are Loyal Party Patriots (and our two newest Cabinet Officers) James Killus and Kiera PSI. Thanks to James’ and Kiera’s help, starting in August I’ll be able to take a much-needed vacation from blog administration/organizing. Huzzah!

Wait - I know what you’re thinking: “Kiera and James? What, the WAAGNFNP blog is going to an all-Buffy, all the time format?” Well, maybe yes, maybe no. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Posting may be lighter for the remainder of the summer, (or maybe not), with a lot of our regular contributors being away. For that same reason, we may also drop our formal weekend Open Threads for the remainder of the summer unless the blog chatter picks up. Folks are welcome to use the last post of the week for any Open Thread needs they might have over the weekend. In any event, we will try our best to keep the Posting Schedule updated for you (link in the upper right hand column under “Pages”).

Yours In Service,

Oaktown Girl

I’m hoping for at least the Minister of Theoretical Munitions Portfolio. You’re nobody until you’ve had your phone tapped.

Well, you’re definitely someone after you’ve been accosted on the job by the DOD and pretty much forced to sign a confidentiality agreement. I’m just not so sure I wanted to be that much of a Someone.

But hey, phone tapped or not (I’ve never cared enough to check) I still need a better title than Sheriff.

Kiera - JP is the absolute King of creating WAAGNFNP titles, as is evidenced by his own title. peter ramus is excellent too, but he’s on extended leave - hopefully back in the fall. Your new co-Cabinet Minister, James, has been known to turn an excellent phrase or two.

I hereby command that our finest minds and Loyal Party Patriots be put on the project. Your WAAGNFNP sheriff title needs to be something that’s appropriately grandiose and conveys both enforcement and punishment.

And preferably does not contain the title “Mistress”.

Understood, but not to worry, Kiera. Anyone looking for, ahem, “discipline” will have to look elsewhere.

Say, I heard that the “DC Madam” has said that nearly all her customers requesting “discipline” were…Republicans.

So I’m confused. I’m a self limiting member in that I don’t visit, read, and comment on a dozen blogs out there on the internet. What’s the difference between a community versus a basic group blog? How much response does a post have to have to be considered to be generating enough interest? Or is the variety of responses that count? What sort of impact was the goal of this blog anyway? Were we supposed to be more than a few friends chatting with each other?

Um, ok. Oaktown Girl, looks like you’ve been having a tough month too. : )

    Seattle -
You’ve asked way more questions than I can answer from work, but if you go back to read the “Mission” post again, that will give you many of the answers you seek about community vs. group blog. I can email you links to traditional community blogs and group blogs later.

Regarding participation, the issue wasn’t about number of comments on a posts. It was about the number of posts we were receiving. You can’t have a blog without blog posts. As for comments specifically, I did ask for more women to come out from lurking because it’s a better conversation (and more fun) that way.

There was no “impact” goal for this blog. Just the opportunity to for more people exchange ideas and share information in a fun and not so frenetic way. (And in case you’re not going to go back and read the Mission post, we’re talking about arts, sciences, and progressive politics, mostly).

Were we supposed to be more than a few friends chatting with each other?

Well, yeah, that was the goal if there are a lot of people actively participating. But no matter how many people there are, it can always be called “just a few friends chatting”.

Oh, Seattle - I forgot to thank you for your posts!
Especially the “Seattle Does Dallas” one - really cool!

Hope we get more from you soon!

Oh you know me. It’s all about my soap opera and how public do you want me to make that anyway? ; ) I could do a whole post involving feminist issues, race in relations, and the changing views on reproduction which would stretch into book length and everyone would be saying “REALLY, Seattle, too much information…”

I forget until I happened upon it at Lawyers, Guns and Money, that today is the anniversary of The Trinity Test. That makes it a good day to not blow up the blog.

…impossible to come up with a title after that, but I do think that we can all agree for the time being that Kiera possesses Plenary Powers in regard to all matters regarding Trunking, Pre-Trunking, Re-Trunking, Retro-Trunking, and Hysterical Indifference to the Plight of Those Who Have Been Trunked. (Provided, of course, that these Plenary Powers do not impinge on the MOJ’s Super-Duper Awesomest Ever Plenary Powers on Any and Everything You Could Possibly Ever Dream Of.)

JP - that is too funny. Whatever Kiera’s title will be, her sub-title will absolutely have to be “She of the Hysterical Indifference to the Plight of Those Who Have Been Trunked”.

    Outstanding.

Seattle - Bring it on. Don’t worry about any Soap Opera, we’ll just have our popcorn ready. Besides - it’s just us friends here, right? ;)

I have to confess that I stole the idea from Kurt Vonnegut’s God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, where Rosewater’s wife is diagnosed with:
Samaritrophia: “hysterical indifference to the troubles of those less fortunate than oneself.”

ready. Besides - it’s just us friends here, right?

Yes, not like anything here is accessible to the world at large - everything we write here is like, … like, I don’t know, radioactive dust in the wind to coin a phrase.

No matter. You still get full credit for retrieving it for our purposes.

There’s some old quote about there being no less wisdom in a quote used correctly than in being the person who actually wrote (spoke) the quote. But of course I can’t find that quote, so no points for me.

I think that we all have a lot to learn on how a system where attention is the scarce resource operates and evolves. I quail at the number of quality books in the NY Times Review of Books each week that I will never read, much less the ones I will never know about. The same is true of interesting blogs - my current strategy is to hit some biggies for “the buzz” and then concentrate on a few where there are actual discussions in the comments - always trying to lure the unsuspecting here with a well-placed quip.
