Live Blogging the Kentucky Derby!
Sat. 5/5/07 beginning one half hour before start time: 5:30pm Eastern, 2:30pm Pacific. Start time for the race is (I belive) 6:04pm Eastern, on televised on NBC.

[Hey Folks, I’m still fighting a bad cold, so there will be more links than writing here. But that’s OK because I’m not a writer anyway!]
***************

Tomorrow will be the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby. How many of you know these names: Oliver Lewis, Jimmy Winkfield, or Isaac Murphy?

Oliver Lewis was the winning rider in the very first Kentucky Derby in 1875. He was also Black. In fact, African American jockeys dominated the sport in this country until the dawn of the 20th century:

From Tony McClean:

African-American jockeys rode 14 of 15 horses in that first Kentucky Derby. The horse racing sport was built with the talents of Blacks whose jobs typically included trainer, jockey, and owner.

From the Library of Congress’ review of the definitive Edward Hotaling book, Great Black Jockeys:

Decades before baseball player Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier to become the “first” black to play with whites in modern professional sports, black and white jockeys were competing alongside one another on racetracks such as Saratoga.

What happened? Again, from Tony McClean (part II of his article):

To no surprise, some white jockeys resented the choice mounts and big money earned by successful Black riders. Races became combative including several riots between Black and White jockeys in Chicago.

Until I worked for Arnold Rampersad on that Jackie Robinson bio I mentioned in my last post, I never knew baseball was integrated in the late 19th C and only became white-only/Negro Leagues in the midst of the general segregation of the U.S. in the decades following the end of Reconstruction. So Jackie Robinson actually re-integrated baseball. The more you know….

I tried to palp some life into the poor student’s comment thread by making a remarkable one time offer of

    CHARITABLE THREADJACK FLAMEWAR!!!

thinking that might get the keyboards smoking all along the internet and push the lad’s comment count expeditiously past 500, which is the announced goal. Always willing to lend a hand, I am.

But no, except for the unremarkable fact that Rich Puchalsky did remark, my effort seems to have had no effect at all, unless it served to actively turn away comments that otherwise might have been posted but for its presence in the thread.

Also tonight: Bulls-Pistons, game one. Finally it seems the Eastern Conference is getting back to where it belongs (that would be the Central Division for you non-Midwesterners.)

OK peter - I posted a comment there at your buddy’s site for you. (So did christian, but he didn’t link to our site, so as soon as I get better I’m going to have to beat the humility out of him).

OK - back to the bed/couch for me. Hope to see some of you later for our live blogging fiesta at 2:30 Pacific.

By the way, y’all are lucky I’m so ill right now. Otherwise there’d be a gargantuan commment on this thread about the #8 Golden State Warriors, who just barely made it to the playoffs, putting a Gojira-sized beatdown on the #1 Dallas Mavericks. Because that was history-making, and I could go on and on about that if I were feeling better. But I’m not. So I won’t.

I am left with no choice here. First warm up the tube amps; make sure the pre-amps input signals are functioning across all frequencies, link in the inputs from your cpu, power on the board, switch to main, slowly increase attenuation and test the equalization. Then open the page, scroll down until you find:

05/05/77 (Thu) Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum - New Haven, CT
Set 1: Promised Land, Sugaree, Mama Tried > El Paso, Tennessee Jed, Looks Like Rain, Deal, Lazy Lightning > Supplication, Peggy-O, Music Never Stopped
Set 2: Bertha, Estimated Prophet, Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain > Good Lovin’, St. Stephen > Sugar Magnolia, E: Johnny B. Goode

Yes that be 30 years ago today, when Seattle Slew stepped onto the paddock at Lexington only to become a Triple Crown winner five weeks later. That was the year when the major, well-renowned DeadHead RedHead took his Blazers to the NBA championship too. So this is just what he was listening to at the time (the band was sending him tapes).

But, before any of that, you need to first find some good sprigs of fresh mint; grind them into a paste; mix slightly with a fine creme de menthe to liquify; add a touch of powdered sugar or tupelo honey; stir; set aside:
take a large large glass beer mug; fill completely with crushed ice, and freeze:
immediately prior to the 2:30 party, remove mug from freezer, carefully pour the liquified mint extract into the ice, and fill the mug with 100 proof Southern Comfort. Then push play on the mp3 file, start sipping, and blog until you pass out.

I wish I had cable so I could have seen part of that Golden State series. Apparently Baron Davis, who I’ve always thought was strangely underrated (yeah, I know, of course I say that now), has grown a big ol’ beard. And there’s apparently some kind on the team sporting a faux hawk who threw it down on Dirk’s head like every three minutes. And it seems they also have Stephen Jackson, last seen charging into the crowd during the Pacers-Pistons brawl for no discernible reason. Bill Simmons, who veers between being really annoying and hilarious, wrote something like, “From the moment Artest went into the stands, nothing Stephen Jackson did could be described as remotely rational. He was like the bad guy in an action movie who just starts spraying his Uzi into a crowd of innocent people.”

I’m glad Golden State won, but I don’t know how to feel about Dallas. Part of me wants to laugh (they’re just so soft), but part of me does feel bad for them.

Of course a few years earlier than that ( back when the race was held in Louisville…) the race (won by little known Dust Commander), was covered memorably by Hunter S. Thompson (he was a native of Louisville) in a frenetic article for Scanlan’s entitled The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved. Giving a taste of what was to come with F&L in Las Vegas, it was his first collaboration with Ralph Steadman and was set against the growing storm that became Kent State and Jackson State. Worth a read today - it is collected in The Great Shark Hunt.

And unlike most of the others in the press box, we didn’t give a hoot in hell what was happening on the track. We had come to watch the real beasts perform.

It has the familiar blending of twisted, acute observations of the real and hyperreal, with outright fiction. It concludes with a memorable screed after Thompson hears about Kent State on the radio while driving Steadman to the airport - who he has maced somewhere along the way:

[the journalist] … shoves the Englishman out, snarling: “Bug off, you worthless faggot! You twisted pigfucker! [Crazed laughter.] If I weren’t sick I’d kick your ass all the way to Bowling Green - you scumsucking foreign geek. Mace is too good for you… We can do without your kind in Kentucky.”

Here’s the LPGA leaderboard–yup, Ochoa is in the hunt yet again, prompting the question of the year, who will keep her from getting her second win of the season this time? And the follow-up: will anyone win more than 1 this year? If you’re afraid of invoking the MOJ’s wrath for LPGA commenting, you can go ahead and do it at Mostly Harmless, although she has been known to mock golf there, too.

So when is the Derby, Japan time? Have I missed it? And how is Tiger doing?

Well, post time is crawling towards us, so the PSI one has to weigh in with the “names that pop”. I know nothing about the odds, or about the horses…I just look at a list of names. Soooo, for my “in the money” short list, I have “Liquidity”, “Scat Daddy”, and “Curlin”. Something about “Cowtown Cat” is also catching my “ear”.

While my specialty is actually illnesses and emotions, I not bad with sports…and I see the Stankees are still DEAD LAST. That should make Oaktown Girl feel a bit less under the weather. Let’s see if it carries over to horse racing.

gosh it took me a long time to find it… hehehehe but in honor of JD’s mention of great moments in the drinking of Mint Juleps i offer this tribute! (my photobucket is loading terribly right now, so i had to just post another link, and not the image).

Dare i post the LPGA update here? Of course i do, afterall with the minty freshness spinning around through everyones’ heads who will tell the difference between handicapping Wachovia or SemGroup versus Street Sense on Curlin if the Circular Quay does Scat Daddy on Any Given Saturday serenading the Cowtown Cat . So there… and Tiger is going backwards and forwards and up and down, while Singh is staying steady and Rory is charging right into the thick of it.

Louden’s got a one shot lead on a group of four at -4 including the Ochoa as well as Burton, Castrale, and one of TC’s picks Karin Sjodin. And a whole bunch are breathing down with -3’s, including some of TC’s other sophmore favs with the likes of Pressel, Kim, Pak, and Rankin. My pick for a final pairing with Ochoa on Sunday??? Maybe Castrale, but Pressel and Rankin are playing under par with the same vengeance as Ochoa today.

What’s with the freaking Queen and Royal Consort hanging around, and not even dressed to the Ascot hilt. At least the sun is coming out and the crowd is liberated by their juleps. btw: the $1000 Juleps come in these cool Gold cups, with a gold straw, but the metal bruises the mint and fine Kentucky bourbon.

They are moving from the barns to the paddock, so progress is being made towards a start at some point. My question of the minute??? Do we get the British national anthem before or after the Stephen Collins (is that a gin collins??) Foster tribute. All those songs associated with the South, co-opted by Confederates and DW Griffith, and all by a Yankee dude, who died in NYC with 38 cents in his pocket. My old British Home???

  35. on 05 May 2007 at 2:49 pm 35. Kiera PSI said …

    Okay, now we’re getting somewhere.

Got my “names that pop” off of the list of contenders. I know NOTHING about horses or odds…this is just the psychic stuff going on. We’ll see if I have as good luck with this as I do with other sports (sports is NOT my specialty, I specialize in physical and emotional issues).

In the money…not necessarily in this order:

    Liquidity
    Scat Daddy
    Curlin

Now, Oaktown Girl tells me that Curlin is one of the favorites and that Scat Daddy has also gotten some buzz, but I didn’t know that until I chatted her up today.

BTW…Stankees are still in the cellar, hope that makes you feel a little less ill, Oaktown Girl!

So the trainer who had FIVE horses in the race didn’t win.

Wow - the winning jockey had a plan and executed it to a tee! (Stayed out of the opening clusterfuck). I know one jockey that’s going to be very drunk tonight!

I do love seeing the winning horse in that pretty blanket of flowers, gotta admit.

Whew! I was holding my breath for this to not be clusterfuck for the roses! Love that jockey’s reaction. He was so sincerely thrilled. Laughed at the washing the track dirt off the horse. Can we say picking dirt outa your teeth? Love the fact that a Kentucky bred horse won. That frontrunner damned nearly pulled it off. Anybody else think TB’s look like greyhounds?

I’m Still going with A Day in May, but Still think Street Sense will Blow up the Track!

We have a clear winner! And it comes from our Resident Horsewoman, no less!

Stayed tuned, Ya Ya, your victory balloons are on the way!

And now for a change of pace, we’ve got a kickin’ 5/5/2007 performance by the Big Friendly Jazz Orchestra of Takasago High School in Japan. And they’re all women, though they’ve got a man guesting on soprano sax. Could it be that the future of American Big Band Jazz is in the hands of Japanese women?

And everyone can breathe a sigh of relief that the “2007 Clusterfuck to the Roses” did not end up with a bunch of broken horses and jockies.

Cool, Oaktown Girl. I bow to your technical superiority. You go, ya ya woman! I was gonna just hope she would settle for karma points. BTW did y’all hear that Paris Hilton got sentenced to jail for 45 days without her Blackberry? Anybody wanna bet on whether she actually stays in jail for more than 30 minutes?

Hi Ho - good funky jazz link. Nice to see talented young women. I don’t know if it’s because they’re still young, but while they are on the beat, they are missing the groove. Maybe it will come with a few more years under their belts.

Paris Hilton - yeah, I heard about that last night. I can’t believe she’ll be in jail more than a few days. And if she is, it’ll be some special suite or something. Probably with a hot tub and a full bar.

Colonel KL - this guy named Bill Benzon told me how to put in the images, so I can show you how to do it.

As for Paris, maybe she’s in one of those 5-Star jails. That’s what we call “equality before the law.”

Paris *will* get special treatment whether they so not or not! :-P mumble mumble

I’ve read that Paris won’t be allowed to buy herself a comfy jail — which seems to be a common practice in CA. I think it’s all about the appeal.

Please show me how to post thingies like you did, Oaktown! Ya Ya, you any good on picking winners on other sports? BTW saw a sailboat named Pegasus and guess what they called the tender, aka dinghy? Horsefly! LOL

Ochoa double bogeys, Louden bogeys, and Rankin Birdies.. making for a four way tie for first with three to play (Castrale and Sjodin already in the club house at -4). Virada Nirapathpongpor is at -2 with three to play.

Stacy Prammanasudh and Irene Cho are in the very last pairing after the reshuffle (?? TC mentions this over at Mostly (not so ) Harmless), and could contend if they pick up a couple of birdies here on the front nine. We shall see.

So i wonder what the Queen thought about this scene manifested before her??? First time she has been at the Derby, and from my own personal experience, you have to be there at least once to really understand how intense it all is. Sort of like a giant mega-rock festival where the rockstars are horses and everyone has their most favorite band.

Wow - I love that overhead shot showing how the rider of Street Sense made his move. Those overhead shots of the race are the best.

Kiera - I have no idea how much you would have made of Curlin to show. Too sick to pay attention that closely, unfortunately.

The Minister of Justice would like to thank everyone for being here to keep me company and brighten my day stuck at home being sick. You guys so totally rock! And on behalf of the entire WAAGNFNP High Council and Cabinet Ministry, I hope you newbies here will “bookmark” us and visit again soon…and not just as lurkers!

Well, I’ve got to put on some shoes and go to store to get more juice and crackers. Talk to y’all later.

In the States, justice is usually only for the rich or the championed by the rich. Good question what the Queen and PP thought. Did they think? Wonder if they bet? Regarding fights, I’ve been in far too many to watch a couple of idiots in a ring getting their brains turned to Parkinson’s. Just IMHO. Oaktown, don’t forget the chix soup! Ovaltine is nice for the vities and tastes really good even without run or Baileys in it. :) Heading out tomorrow to de horse farm west of here in Central Florida.

That’s right, there’s the big De La Hoya - Merrywhether (sp?)fight I’ve been hearing so much about. I’m not a boxing fan, but I have to admint I’ll be interested to hear who wins.

Thanks, Ya Ya. Colonel KL reminded me to get soup too, which is a good idea.

OK, I’m outta here (wheezing to the store). See y’all back here later. Looking forward to reading everyone’s hoops, baseball, boxing, and even golf analysis as the weekend marches on. Me, I get to relax (emotionally) because my Warriors have already done their thing against Dallas. The A’s have so many injuries right now they can barely field a team. So, as far as that goes, it is what it is. Not gonna stress.

Can we say picking dirt outa your teeth? It appeareth to me that the jockey didn’t quite have any teeth, must take them out for the rides.

As for the ladies: four are tied at -4 at the end of round two (of three) although some are still out on the course, as it gets darker and colder. Castrale, Louden, Rankin, and Sjodin are in, as are the next group of two at -3, then three at -2, and a bunch down at -1 including Ochoa, Inkster, Park, Pak, et al. Tulmis, still on the course, now playing the tough 17 is at -1, and any birdie gets her into the top tier for the day. So who ya got TC??

Spyder, you’re pretty cool. Yep, and Oaktown I suggest some Vicks Vaporub for de schnozzola. Hoping for better weather in the midwest for Ya Ya. Oh and PSI person, you can’t be good at everything. Goodness knows I’m sure not. Feeding frenzy going on here in a few moments. Leftovers, anyone?
