Blog Against Theocracy & WAAGNFNP Posted by Oaktown Girl, 10 Apr 2007 06:06 am
Thank-You’s and An Update
First, the update: Dr. Free Ride’s much anticipated follow-up to this extremely popular post will be arriving here tomorrow. Don’t miss it!
And now, the Thank-You’s:
The WAAGNFNP would like to thank Blue Gal and all the co-sponsors and organizers of Blog Against Theocracy Week(end). You worked your asses off to make it all possible, and it was a huge success. Thanks for bringing so many people, both religious and not, together to talk, sound the alarm, and share ideas about getting active before it’s too late. Here’s a link to the blogswarm participants. Lots of good reading in there, so check it out.
It is with great pride and an overflowing heart that I proclaim the WAAGNFNP made a truly outstanding showing for Blog Against Theocracy Week. From Friday -Monday, we had four tremendous posts offering unique and insightful angles on both the threat growing theocratic influence poses to our democracy, as well as reasons to be optimistic for the future. For those of you who have not had a chance to read these fine posts (and the extremely thoughtful discussion in the comments - a staple of this nascent community blog which is quickly making it a “must read”), please take the time to do so. Just scroll on down. You’ll be glad you did.
We actually received a total of six BAT Week contributions, but we’ll save those last two for future posting because the spectre of theocracy and the importance of keeping the church and state separate are always timely topics.
So a huge, no, a GIANT thank you to all our BAT Week contributors and commenters. Surely Gojira is smiling upon us all.
In honor of our fine BAT Week posts, I ask the following questions:
- To what do you pledge allegiance and/or how would your change the current pledge?
- If you were on a Sunday talking head show and/or trapped in a room with Bill Donohue, what would you say?
- [The following is corrected information here, thanks Virus Head:] jimmyraybob’s BAT post made notable mention on Virus Head’s exclusive list of Best Bits numbers 1-15. Question: What demonic deal did jimmyrabob make with Lord Astaroth to get this done?
- And finally, for the love of Gojira - what will you do to save the children?
Optional bonus questions:
- How was your weekend?
- Tiger Woods: worst golfer ever?
- [added by christian h.] How much payroll does it take for the Cubs not to stink?
And be sure to tune in tomorrow when Dr. Free Ride throws more gas on the fire, tries to talk sense into, pisses everyone off posts her long awaited follow-up to
Science and Belief.

That’s a possible side-effect I didn’t consider. Sweet. No, it’s more because the rich Hamptons people populating that article confirm every single prejudice you might have about them…

I don’t pledge. My allegiances are all conditional.

Two comments on Tiger and his transcendentalness:
1) Other than 13, it was basically a “dreadful” day for him - but still ended up tied 2nd & he really was the straw that stirred the drink for a lot of the round. (Sabbatini for a bit and of course Johnson being the others.)
2) re: The “Tiger Redesign” at Augusta which finally really bit everyone. You know you are in rarefied air when they change the rules of the style of play or the playing field in response to your abilities. Instances I can think of: Alcindor/dunk in college, Ruth/lots of things, Wilt Chamberlain/a few things like lane width, running start for a foul shot, and a surprising one Jim Brown/not allowed to hold lacrosse stick in to your body.

Yeah, no one is close to Tiger still. The LPGA is where the action is–Lorena Ochoa is going to chase down Annika Sorenstam as world #1 this month and anyone in
themy top 20 on the LPGA can win any week. -

I am listening to the statement by Rutgers’ women’s basketball head coach C. Vivian Stringer regarding the Imus mess. I am ready to give my membership in humanity another chance knowing that there is still leadership that can both make me feel humble and at the same time make me proud to in some small way be connected. I’ll pledge allegience to the ideals that she so elegantly and passionately expressed.
Oh oh, here come the players - I may have to reup for multiple tours.
Long live the Enlightenment.

You may state your pledge to the LPGA without it being in conflict with your WAAGNFNP Loyalty Oath. But we still need to know how you’re going to save the children from Bill Donahue.James - I love your pledge. Sounds like a strange mix of something Bart Simpson would say with something you’d say.
Liver tea? Ugh. I’m not saluting that flag.

jimmyraybob - quite right. I got to hear a bit of Rutgers coach before I left for work this morning. I didn’t get to hear it all, but what I did hear was great. She did an outstanding job of putting actual faces (humanity) to these talented young women.
And from a pure sports standpoint, what a story! From seemingly crushing defeats early in the season to the National Championship game.

I pledge allegiance to my refusal to pledge allegiance to anything, and to the paradox which thereby results, circling endlessly, without resolution, annoyingly self-referential forever.

Brilliant!Oh, thanks for putting up that awesome Gil Scott-Heron video. (I had the good fortune to be able to see him live once back in the 80’s).
We sure had a lot of televised pledges immediately after Sept.11th, didn’t we?

On the Bill Donohue thing, I’ve been trying to get Bitch Ph.D. and Pandagon to join my advocacy campaign for a Peeps Jesus installation that would finally make his head explode (think of the possibilities!), but so far no takers.

A Peeps Jesus would be highly flammable. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing.
Trapped in an elevator with Bill Donohue, I think my first question would have to be, “Who would Jesus bully?” There would be a follow-up on bearing false witness, and I’d probably wing it from there until he cried.
The Cubs are not going to win this year because the apocalypse is not coming this fall. (Check your Old Farmer’s Almanac.)

Geez, thanks a lot. I was looking for some blind faith. Guess this is the wrong place for that. Also, the MoJ might be interested to hear about your less-than-positive outlook on the likelihood of the GNF.

Oh, the GNF will happen, just not this year.
(Also, for the record, I’m a life-long Cubs fan. That’s how I know about the “winning the World Series means it’s time to go home and die with your family” thing.)

The cursory dropping of 60’s musical references reflects an appeal to the higher power of that to which we should pledge. All great things in this universe begin with the downbeat oneness. There is more than sufficient evidence for that construct to be held as the core of the GNF itself. Therefore i pledge what is left of any of my four, no five, no, make that three souls to the first downbeat of the phurst nucleus smashed by that bigass jesus of a proton. And can anyone help me find my way home??

* To what do you pledge allegiance and/or how would your change the current pledge?
I have never in my life pledged allegiance to the flag. I think it’s a very creepy nationalistic ritual, and the US gov simply isn’t my religion.
* If you were on a Sunday talking head show and/or trapped in a room with Bill Donohue, what would you say?
I would point out the beauty of the piece, and ask him why he is so uneasy about the implied “communion.”
* jimmyraybob’s BAT post (with my genius title, thank you very much!) made Virus Head’s Top 15 for all the BAT Week posts - you can find it as #5 on that list. Question: What demonic deal did jimmyrabob make with Lord Astaroth to get this done?
Just a clarification - I picked my favorite bits from every BAT post that was listed as of the end of the weekend. If you look at the list, which I posted before I started excerpting, it was in the order from earliest to latest. The BAT blog said at the time that they were chronologically listed. At some point others were added and it doesn’t seem to be in any particular order now. In retrospect, I probably should have put them in order of my favorite posts. But I didn’t - wahhh.
If I missed anyone, please let me know!

I tried to leave a comment at your blog, but could not find out how to enter the correct “security” word because it would not give me one. How do I get the “security” word to show for me so I can enter it? -

I’m not sure why it wouldn’t be showing. I’ve just updated the plug-in for that. Try again. If you still don’t see it, allow scripts for the page. And if that still doesn’t work, email me.
